Smelters' Home History
1849 - 2023

The Smelters’ Home, [later Opie’s Hotel] a splendid new house of entertainment, has been opened in the vicinity of the Smelting Works by Mr A. Wren.   17 October 1849, SA Register.

Built in 1849 this building has had a colourful history.  As one of the first buildings in Burra, it holds both State and National Heritage status and claims to be the oldest unrenovated pub in Australia. Smelters Home was originally built to provide a pub and accommodation for the smelters working in the mine. Since then it has been used for a range of businesses; including a carpenter, builder, store and mechanic, before becoming a residential property ; known to locals as Opies Flats and then as a private residence. Historians and enthusiasts have provided me with some fabulous records of this significant establishment.
